6 Collaborations that should have never happened

Collaborations are a big deal in the music industry for obvious reasons. In Nigeria, we have been lucky to be blessed with a number of excellent collaborations over the years.  You know that moment when two of your favourites hop on the same song – extended pleasure!

However, not all that glitters is gold. Even when the A-list artistes hop on a song, the result can be below par sometimes. We have gotten some smashing collaborations in the past, as well as some disappointing ones. Well, let us take a moment to appreciate the people who released beautiful songs after horrible collaborations. They helped us move on.

In our own not-so-humble opinion, here are some of the collaborations we think should have never happened in the first place.

1. Olamide – Summer Body ft Davido

Despite the duo giving us two smashing hit songs in the past – ‘Money’ and ‘Panumo’, this particular song was a NO NO for the Nigerian music industry. We thought it was something coiled from joblessness and a play date with both artistes. Perhaps, Davido was just in need of an excuse to diss Wizkid with his “yankee passport” line. This song happened when there was a huge buzz about Olamide’s career internationally and a lot of people thought it was Badoo’s attempt to rubbish the claim but it didn’t really do well.

It has weak ASF lyrics, no vibe and the song felt very flat. Hoping Davido would have at least made that song a smashing hit was brought about another disappointment. It felt like they two artistes didn’t put in enough efforts into making  that song and thought the fans would just accept it because they were two of the hottest stars that year.

2. Tiwa Savage – Get it now ft Omarion

To be honest, we don’t really know what to have expected from this but gosh, it’s Omarion! It’s huge! But nooo, we got something even up and coming artistes wouldn’t take inspiration from. There was an initial buzz about the song before it was released because of the calibre Omarion possesses but this song tanked so hard. Unlike many Tiwa Savage songs which had done well that year, this song wasn’t carried by the visuals…instead, it was carried by idea of an international artiste.

3. Tekno – Mama ft Wizkid

Just the first Wizkid collaborations on this list that we think should have just been left in the hard drive. Of all Mama’s that have been released popular Nigerian artistes, this song will definitely be regarded as the worst. If we had to rank, we will say Kizz Daniel, Mayorkun, Sean Tizzle and Tekno. The song might have done well on charts due to Wizkid’s influence in the industry. Let’s face it. Starboy is the most influential person in the Nigerian music industry. Even his whisper will outrank most artistes BUT was “Mama” really worth the hype? Doubtful! The two parties could have done extremely better than what they gave us TBF

4. Yemi Alade – Oh My Gosh ft Rick Ross

Yeah, you are reading it right. Yemi Alade had a song featuring Rick Ross which was released in 2019 and has over 5 million views on YouTube. I wouldn’t blame you if you have never heard of it. The idea of Rick Ross on another Nigerian song sounds exciting but this song was actually a flop. If you have listened to this song before, we doubt if you can remember eight lines from the song. Hit songs  are not easily forgettable.

5. Wizkid – African Bad Gyal ft Chris Brown

This particular hit was recorded in 2014 but was only released three years later. The duo kept teasing us about the song which really got people’s hopes up for an amazing collabo. I mean it’s Starboy and Chris Brown! What could go wrong? Apparently, so many things were missing. The song also didn’t do well on the charts as expected despite the status of the two artistes.

6. Dbanj – Issa Banger ft Slimcase & Mr Real

SO therefore issa banger! This song made it look like D’banj was in desperate need of an hit and had to feature Slimcase & Mr Real – who were making waves back then – but the song was actually a flop. D’banj’s attempt at trying to remind people of his youthful side again wasn’t really the best. Firstly, Slimcase barely has any debt. Secondly, all Mr Real does is repeat verses. How he expected that song to be a smashing hit was beyond me. Although, you might hear it on your street and in barber shops but the  song was waaayyy below par.
