France Football Magazine has announced the nominees for the Kopa Trophy, a trophy that is awarded to the best footballer under 21 years of age, and Pedri is among the final 10 nominees this year.
After an outstanding breakthrough year with both Barcelona and the Spanish national team, Pedri is looking to become the first winner of the award since 2019, as in 2020 there wasn’t an award given out due to the impact COVID-19 had on the format of leagues.
Pedri is one of the favourites, although he will go up against some of the very best young talents across the globe today, although rather curiously a lot of them are English.
Mason Greenwood, Bukayo Saka and Jude Bellingham are three such nominees, whilst Germany boasts two in the form of Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz.
Just who is Pedri’s biggest competition?
Having established himself as a regular starter under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the Manchester United academy graduate is improving all the time. His shooting ability is so naturally good, that he just needs to develop the physical side of his game to match up.
Having lived through one of the toughest moments a footballer can in missing a decisive penalty in the shootout of a major international final, Saka has impressed with his maturity and ability to bounce back.
Signed by Rennes to continue their policy of securing bright young talent, Doku has been a revelation in Ligue 1 and became a starter for Belgium in Euro 2020. He is technically gifted, finds space well and has an incredible amount of physical attributes which make him such a handful for defenders.
Perhaps the least heralded name on this list yet, but the Dutch midfielder is destined for greatness. He was the youngest debutant in Ajax history and is now running the team’s midfield at just 19 years old.
